Extracranial Case Study

CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System Pulmonary Case Study
NSCLC Left Upper Lung

CASE HISTORY:

  1. 65-year-old female presenting with a 1.5 cm x 2.0cm pulmonary nodule in the left upper lobe
  2. Histology: Poorly differentiated non-small cell lung carcinoma with focal squamous features
  3. Stage: T1 N0 M0

CYBERKNIFE® TREATMENT RATIONALE:

  1. Extracranial cancer streatment case studyPatient refused surgery due to long-term recovery concerns
  2. Conventional radiation therapy would require large margins of normal tissue irradiation, increasing risks of treatment morbidities. Stereotactic radiosurgery with the CyberKnife® System was chosen given the ability to reduce dose to surrounding tissues, skin, muscle, and bone

TREATMENT PLANNING:

  1. Coronal planning image showing the tumor, lung parenchyma and isodose curves
  2. 3D image of bony anatomy, segmented lung, and beam orientations

Extracranial cancer treatment case studyTREATMENT DELIVERY:

  1. Prescription dose of 48 Gy delivered to 71% isodose line in 3 fractions
  2. Treatment included 154 non-coplanar, non-isocentric beams per fraction

RESULTS:

  • Three months after treatment with the CyberKnife® System, patient reported no signs or symptoms of local regional recurrence or treatment related toxicity
  •  Patient had a complete radiographic response at 15 weeks
  • Patient continues to be free of disease at 10 month follow-up by PET CT
