The most common type of lung cancer is callednon-small cell (NSCL) and a smaller number are called small cell. If the cancer is diagnosed in an early stage, surgery is usually the best treatment.
For more advanced cases radiation and chemotherapy are generally used. Newer forms of radiation (e.g., CyberKnife) may be as effective as surgery and may be the treatment of choice in early stages cases if the patient is not a suitable candidate for surgery.
For patients with limited cancer, radiosurgery with Cyberknife may result in cure rates similar to surgery. For patients with more advanced cancer, more sophisticated targeting using image guided IMRT (e.g., Tomotherapy) allows for the delivery of high doses of radiation with lower risks of complications. Endobronchial HDR may be an option for some lung cancer situations.
